Healthier Wine Should Be Your Top 2021 Resolution

You don’t have to kick alcohol to maintain your 2021 wellness goals. Discover why drinking healthier wine should be your top 2021 resolution!

It’s that time of year again. Just pick up your phone and there’s an advertisement for dieting, exercising, and basically working your butt off to be the best YOU possible. While we support improving your overall wellness…it’s a lot of pressure. Last year was really hard for most of us. So, the idea of working towards perfection feels pretty overwhelming.

So, what if instead of completely overhauling your diet or attempting the latest fitness craze, you just made one or two small changes? Plus, what if those changes had a surprisingly big impact? For us, it just means drinking high-quality wine free of residual sugar and toxins. That’s it!

Plus, not to humble-brag, but we’re pretty good at watching our carbs. KetoConnect even included us in their list of fifteen best wines for keto. No big deal 😉

So, if you’re like us and can’t live without your nightly glass of wine, that’s fine. Have you been desperately looking forward to catching up with friends over a bottle of wine? Us too! Honestly, we’re not here to tell you what NOT to do. We want you to keep enjoying the things you love without any guilt. If that’s the mood you’re trying to maintain this year, then keep reading to find out why drinking healthier wine should be your top 2021 resolution.

Why You Should Stick to Healthier Wine in 2021

Like we said, last year was HARD. We’re big advocates of drinking in moderation. However, there were days when we indulged in an extra glass of wine (or two). So, before going any further, just know we’re not here to judge or shame anyone.

Luckily, while those extra glasses of wine might have put us a smidge over our nutrition goals for the day–it really wasn’t that bad. We hesitate to even call those extra glasses a setback. However, the only reason we felt safe indulging was because we don’t drink low-quality wine.

If you’re drinking wine with added sugar, a variety of chemical additives, and a high ABV…it’s going to take you more than some extra hydration to recover. Don’t believe us? Well, here are a few details you might want to consider…

Low-Quality Wines Often Have Unnecessary Additives and Toxins.

While there’s a lengthy list of chemicals that have been approved for use by the wine industry, we don’t use many of them. Some of them are common and simply used as preservatives. Others “correct” flaws in the wine (like Mega Purple) and some can even be toxic.

Plus, there’s also the difference between processing aids used during treatment or processing and food additives that the OIV describes as, “any substance not normally consumed as a food by itself and not normally used as a typical ingredient of the food, whether or not it has nutritive value.” Also, did we mention that neither of those ingredient categories is required to be presented on the label of a wine bottle? Yeah, that sounds pretty sketchy to us too.

If you want to learn a bit more about the potential wine additives you might find in low-quality wine, click here. However, trust us when we say that the more you know about wine additives, the less you’ll want to drink wine with unnecessary additives.

No Added Sugars Means Fewer Calories and Better Nutrition

Another thing we don’t add to our wine is sugar. There’s already natural sugar in wine, but for one reason or another, a vintner may need to add additional sugar. Sometimes this just helps the fermentation process, but other times it’s simply to create a sweeter taste. While this isn’t always the case, this can sometimes create a wine with more sugar than is healthy–sometimes upwards of 200 grams!

Regardless of your nutritional goals, having too much sugar isn’t good for you. It can lead to weight gain, acne, increase your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, lead to lower energy levels, and much more. That means drinking an extra glass of low-quality wine could have far more negative consequences than just a hangover.

Plus, with no added sugars, that means lower overall carbs as well.

Choose Low-Carb Wine to Maintain Nutritional Goals

Maybe your nutrition goals don’t include eating low-carb, but drinking carb-heavy beverages can make it harder to eat healthy in general.

We’re not here to hate on carbs–they’re your body’s primary source of energy! However, we are firm believers in moderation. Moderation when it comes to sugar, alcohol, and even carbs. That’s why we drink low-carb wine.

Complex carbs are high in fiber and digest more slowly. So, they actually give you more energy over a longer period of time. That means fewer cravings and feeling full for longer. Sounds good! It’s the simple carbs that you have to watch out for, and low-quality wine can have a hefty amount of simple carbs.

Simple carbs don’t have much nutritional value. They’re digested very quickly for a short burst of energy and afterward can leave you with brain fog from blood sugar levels rising and falling too quickly. This can actually make you hungrier and make it harder to maintain your energy levels. If you’ve ever binged junk food after a night of sugary, carb-heavy wine then you know exactly what we’re talking about.

So, not only is low-carb wine perfect for those on the keto diet, it makes it easier in the long run to make better nutritional decisions.

Low-Alcohol Wine Means a Guilt-Free Second Glass

Did you know the USDA recommends keeping your wine intake under 5 ounces (1 glass) for women and 10 ounces (2 glasses) for men? If you’re looking back in horror at those nights where you and your bestie finished a bottle together, you’re not alone.

While moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with some benefits, drinking too much means you lose all benefits and begin to damage your body. That’s why consuming alcohol in moderation is so important, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to switch to low-alcohol wine

Low-alcohol wine also has less sugar, carbs, and calories. So, not only are you avoiding the potential damage from too much alcohol, but you’re also avoiding things that make it harder for you to live a healthy lifestyle. Plus, you still get to drink delicious wine!
