Types of Wine (and how to find low-carb wine options)

If you already know of a few types of wine you like, this is the easiest place to start. Plus, if you have a picky friend who only drinks certain wines, this is a great way to help them branch out!

If you like Cabernet…

Those following a keto lifestyle are probably already familiar with the full-bodied and often fruit-forward cabernet. That’s because it’s naturally a pretty low-carb wine. These dry wines usually have notes from both red and black fruits, with noticeable tannins.

If that sounds particularly delicious to you, then you’ll love our Fattoria di Travalda. Think coffee, chocolate, and berries (yum!). For something a little rounder, you’ll like the Supertuscan Tenuta di Burchino. And if you’re looking for a wine that manages to be perfect as both an everyday drinking wine and with food, the Guadalmare, Maremma is right up your alley.

If you like Chardonnay…

This wine can range from medium to full body, with moderate acidity and alcohol levels. If that sounds like your preferred wine, then you’ll love our low carb wine versions, like our Santa Lucia Toscana Bianco. It’s crisp and dry, but tropical notes of pineapple and banana blend perfectly with more floral notes of acacia and hay. For something still in the chardonnay wheelhouse but maybe a tad more adventurous, you’ll like our Tenuta di Ceppaiano. The aromatics are reminiscent of litchi, raspberry, and rose (yum!). And for something with a milder body, try our PALO61, Toscana Bianco. It’s fresh, it’s delicate, and chardonnay lovers will appreciate its crisp, floral notes.

If you like Pinot Grigio…

This refreshing white wine is less sweet and more acidic than a chardonnay, but when served cold on a hot summer day there’s nothing finer. If you’re looking to please a Pinot Grigio fan, they’ll love our Castellani, Pinot Grigio delle Venezie. Serve this wine chilled to experience the crisp notes of apple, peach, and hawthorne. Our PALO61, Toscana Bianco is another favorite, but Pinot Grigio lovers are more apt to notice its subtle balsamic notes.

If you like Pinot Noir…

While pinot noir may seem intense and mysterious, this light to medium-bodied dry red wine is surprisingly fruit-forward. They often have a tantalizing blend of herbs, spice, and then more tart fruits like cherries or currents. You might think the sweeter notes of this wine would mean lots of carbs and sugar, however, we have several low-carb wine options that won’t disappoint!

If that sounds tantalizing to you, then you should definitely try our Grand Noir. Its texture is, in one word, velvety. Its black pepper and balsamic notes give it that classic pinot noir flavor, while subtle blueberry and strawberry flavors give it the perfect touch of sweetness. La Cattura is another favorite of pinot noir fans, but the overall experience of this bottle is milder with notes of white pepper and berries. And, of course, our Tenuta Santa Lucia is an excellent selection if you’re looking for less spice and more fruit flavors.

If you like Sauvignon Blanc…

When a pinot grigio is a tad too sweet for you but the acidity is just right, you might be a Sauvignon Blanc fan. These traditionally dry wines are far more aromatic and tend to have zesty citrus and floral peach notes. If that’s the case, you’ll love the following low-carb wine options! Try our PALO61, Toscana Bianco, and/or our Vermentino. The latter has a gorgeous aroma of fresh sage and rosemary, while its peach flavors are sure to please any Sauvignon Blanc lover.

If you like Merlot…

While it’s sweeter than other red wines, merlot is traditionally dry with easy tannins and a soft finish. There’s a surprisingly large amount of variety among merlots, however, because the grapes respond so differently to cold or warm climates. If you’re looking for that classic soft texture, you’ll love our Guadalmare. For something a little more complex, you’ll like our Supertuscan Tenuta di Burchino. It’s a soft, round wine but its aromatics are surprisingly deep. And for something with a tad more spice, try our Tenuta Ceppaiano, “Alle Viole.” The combination of orange and aniseed is simply sublime.

If you like Sangiovese…

For those who enjoy the pucker of more acidic wines, a Sangiovese never disappoints. This, often savory, wine can still offer more round, fruity flavors like sour cherries. For low-carb wine fans of Sangiovese, try our Guadalmare, Morellino di Scansano. With less earthy notes than your traditional Sangiovese, its violet and cherry flavors won’t disappoint. For something with more classic spice notes, you’ll enjoy our Filicheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Tobacco and violets, need we say more?

If you like Chianti…

This classic Italian wine is very dry, varies in body, and is often best enjoyed when expertly paired with food. Our Campomaggio Chianti Classico will please chianti lovers with its dry balsamic notes and dark red fruit flavors. Another obvious selection would be our Chianti DOCG Riserva with its dark chocolate and cherry flavors. And for something a little more complex and floral, our Chianti Superiore DOCG won’t disappoint.

If you like Shiraz…

A Shiraz is dark, full-bodied, with noticeable tannins and mid to high alcohol levels. Even more than that, its flavor ranges from intensely savory to floral and herbaceous. To say it’s complex is putting it lightly. If that sounds good to you, then you’ll love our Tenuta Santa Lucia. This wine is a beautiful blend of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo grapes, and it’s flavors are reminiscent of cherries and blueberries.

Flavors of Wine (and low-carb wine options!)

If you read through the previous section and still found yourself a bit lost, then this is the section for you. Here, we’ve broken down the different flavors you might encounter when sampling wine.

So, if you know you like fruit-forward wine, check out the Cherry or Fruity section. If you prefer bolder earthy flavors, try wines with spicy or pepper flavors! If you like…ok, you get the picture.

Cherries

If you like Cherries, you’ll absolutely love our PALO61, Toscano Rosso. It’s an intense, spicy red wine, but don’t let that deter you. Its cherry notes have made it an all-time favorite among wine lovers who prefer the sweet, tartness of cherries. You may also like our Tenuta Santa Lucia. This wine is a little more fruit-forward with notes of cherries and blueberries. And if you’re looking for something a little more subtle and delicate, try the Guadalmare, Morellino di Scansano. Violets give it a surprisingly floral aroma that will have you dreaming of spring.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate has a special place in the hearts of wine lovers, and not just because wine and chocolates are a particularly romantic gift. You can find this flavor in both sweet and dry wines, but for low-carb wine options, you’ll love these! Our Fattoria di Travalda beautifully blends chocolate, coffee, and berries with subtle aromatics of jasmine and geranium. The Campomaggio Chianti Classico is a great choice for dry wine lovers who still want dark chocolate flavors. And for something a little softer and rounder, our Supertuscan Tenuta di Burchino combines dark chocolate, balsamic, and berries.

Blueberry

Blueberry is a particularly hard flavor to get just right. They’re light, delicately sweet, and dark without too much pucker. But blueberry lovers everywhere will love our Chianti DOCG, Tenuta Santa Lucia, and our Tenuta Ceppaiano, “Alle Viole.” The first option is medium-bodied and blends several berry flavors, while the last option herbaceous with notes of dark berries and oranges. And for an intense blueberry experience, try the Tenuta Santa Lucia.

Spice

Spice can mean many things, but you know it when you experience it. Our Guadalmare, Morellino di Scansano, admittedly, is fruit-forward. However, it has subtle notes of red and black currant with nutmeg. For more traditional spice notes, you’ll enjoy the tobacco flavor in our Filicheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. And for that perfect blend of sweet and spice, our Fattoria di Travalda perfectly blends chocolate, coffee, and a variety of spices.

Earthy

If you’re new to the wine scene, you might not immediately gravitate to a wine described as “earthy.” We urge you to reconsider, however, as these wines are some of the most memorable. Our medium-bodied Grand Noir is a perfect example with its velvety texture and balsamic notes. La Cattura Toscana is another excellent selection because of the subtle truffle flavor. For those looking for extreme earthy flavors, our Campomaggio Chianti Classico DOCG blends balsamic and leather aromas for a truly unforgettable experience.

Pepper

Pepper is another flavor that new wine drinkers may hesitate to sample, but these are some of the best wines to pair with food. The tobacco flavors in the Filicheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are enhanced by the mildness of white pepper. For a more complex flavor, our Guadalmare, Morellino di Scansano DOCG perfectly blends pepper with other spices like cinnamon. And for anyone looking for that classic black-pepper kick, our PALO61, Toscano Rosso will not disappoint.

Fruity

Many new wine drinkers gravitate towards more fruit-forward wines, and for good reason! The Tenuta Santa Lucia is fresh, fruity, and clearly tastes of blueberries and cherries. If peaches and raspberries are more to your taste, you’ll enjoy our La Cattura. And if your mouth waters at the thought of cherries and blackberries, you should absolutely give our Chianti DOCG a try.

Strawberries

While strawberries should technically be included in the “fruity” category, they’re so delicious we’re putting them in a category of their own. For our strawberry enthusiasts looking for a low-carb wine, we’d recommend our Grand Noir, Guadalmare, Morellino di Scansano, or the Supertuscan Tenuta di Burchino. Each of them subtlety weaves that classic strawberry flavor with the other components of the wine.

Wine Body

Wine can be described as light, medium, or full-bodied. This term refers to the sensation of drinking wine and how its weight and fullness feel in your mouth. Oftentimes, this is a combination of alcohol, sugar, and acidity.

Obviously, since medium-bodied wine will fall somewhere between full-bodied and light-bodied, let’s just focus on the last two. If something doesn’t quite seem to fit perfectly in either category, it would be considered medium-bodied.

Full Body

Full-bodied wines are pretty powerful and generally have higher alcohol content. In general, they have complex and well-rounded flavors, but there’s no mistaking that weighty mouth-feel. For a full-bodied wine, we’d recommend the Filicheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Fattoria di Travalda, or the Campomaggio Chianti Classico.

Light Body

On the opposite end of the spectrum, light-bodied wines generally have less alcohol and a more crisp, delicate mouthfeel. If you’re looking for a light-bodied wine, start with our ALIBEA. Its light and fruity flavors more than make up for the low alcohol content (plus, that makes it easier to have an extra glass without the guilt). Another excellent selection would be the Chianti DOCG or the Tenuta Ceppaiano.
