Why Buy Wine Made From Organic and Sustainably Grown Grapes

Selecting wine can be overwhelming, but choosing wine made from organic or sustainably grown grapes is always the right call.

If you’ve tried to purchase wine, whether online or in-store, you’ve definitely noticed that there are a LOT of options. Between the different styles, regions, and more…it can be a bit overwhelming. One of the easiest ways to narrow down your selection is to simply look for your preferred type of wine. Do you like dry white wines? Try Chardonnay. More into sweet florals? Definitely reach for a rose. But even that doesn’t narrow it down a lot. That’s why we recommend buying wine made from organic and sustainably grown grapes.

Not only does this narrow down the selection quite a bit, but it’s better for you and for the planet. Read on and learn more about the many benefits of shopping for wine made from organic and sustainable grapes.

Why You Should Buy Wine Made From Organic Grapes

Wine is such a celebratory drink. Whether you’re drinking it to celebrate a special occasion, to enjoy spending time with friends and family, or even just to celebrate the end of a long workday, wine is good for your spirit. So, drinking wine that’s better for your body just makes sense. But let’s look deeper…

First, wines made from organic grapes still look, taste, and cost similar to non-organic options. They ripen just like any other grapes. Second, certified organic vineyards aren’t allowed to use certain ingredients due to their potential hazards. Obviously, you don’t want ingredients in your wine that might cause you harm, so this is definitely a win.

At any point during the winemaking process, organic wines cannot contain synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or other chemicals. That also includes any additives used during the growing, harvesting, and actual winemaking process. These additives must also be organically grown and free of GMOs.

Plus, there’s very little room for interpretation when a wine says it’s made from organic grapes. According to the USDA, “When a wine is labeled as being made with organic grapes, 100% of those grapes used must be certified organic.” They also clarify that any organic wine requires certification that both the growing of the grapes and the winemaking process be organic, “This includes making sure grapes are grown without synthetic fertilizers and in a manner that protects the environment and preserves the soil.”

Speaking of protecting the environment…

Why You Should Buy Wine Made From Sustainably Farmed Grapes

While organic wines ensure that a wine is made from organic ingredients, sustainable vineyards attempt to protect the environment and promote social responsibility while maintaining economic feasibility and still producing the highest quality of wine.

Environmental factors, like soil quality and erosion, are constantly taken into account while grapes are grown and harvested. This also includes making sure that the biodiversity of a vineyard is maintained to strengthen its health and longevity. Even the winemaking process is completed while promoting recycling, water conservation, and some vineyards even use renewable energy sources (like wind and solar) to decrease their carbon footprint even further.

Dry farming, for example, is a method that relies on rainfall instead of irrigation to water vines. Not only does this conserve water, but it also promotes deep root growth and a more concentrated flavor characteristic of the region. Other practices, like biodynamic winemaking, attempt to create more sustainable farming practices by creating a more balanced relationship between soil, plants, livestock, and humans.

Different wine-growing regions have various certifications for sustainability, but it’s important to remember that sustainability is a journey. As the environment changes, the needs of vines will change as well.

We Dry Farm Our Wine | SECCO Wine Club

SECCO Wine Club Strives for Better Wine

While not all organic wines are sustainably made (and vice versa), at SECCO Wine Club we strive to bring those ideals together. All of our wines are lab tested to ensure each wine being shipped to your door meets our high standards. That means no added sugar, chemicals, and pesticides. They’re also 100% NON-GMO and 100% Vegan.

This comes from a combination of dry farming (no irrigation) and old-world organic wine-making (natural fermentation). Our winemakers use no chemicals or artificial sweeteners in the wine-making process, resulting in beautifully tasting wines that are low sugar and low carb.

Honestly, it’s the kind of taste you’ll have to experience for yourself. If you’re not already a member, consider joining our Wine Club so you can sample a variety of our carefully crafted wines today.
