How Can You Drink Wine On The Keto Diet?
The keto diet is a low-carb style of eating that focuses on moderate protein and higher fat content. Because you’re eating fewer carbohydrates while still taking in proteins and increased fat levels, your body goes into something called ketosis. This is a metabolic state where your body starts burning fat, from both your diet and your body, for energy.
So, how exactly does wine fit into that picture?
Surprisingly easily…if you’re drinking the right wine. A lot of commercial wines are packed full of extra sugar and additives. Even if you weren’t trying to live a low-carb lifestyle, that’s not good for you. So, first things first, you need to find a low-carb, low-sugar wine–which is why you’re here!
Second, you still shouldn’t binge drink (that’s not good for you regardless of your dietary choices). The key to drinking wine on the keto diet is balance and mindfulness. We make sure to let you know how many carbs are in each glass, so you can ensure every glass fits into your allotted carbs for the day.
Plus, if you’re trying to strictly adhere to the keto diet, you’ll want to be aware of alcohol’s effect on ketosis. In fact, you should probably just check out all the details here. So long as you practice moderation and maintain balance, there’s no reason why wine can’t be a part of your healthy lifestyle.
Alright, we don’t know about you, but we’re ready to get this countdown started!
#5 Campomaggio Chianti Classico
If you can’t imagine low-carb Italian foods (yes, they exist) without a classic glass of chianti, then this is the wine for you. With only .68 grams of carbs and .19 grams of sugar per glass, this bottle will have you dreaming of Tuscany. Well, Campomaggio to be exact. That’s where the selection of grapes that were used for this particular bottle is from.
This chianti is medium-bodied, balanced, and juicy with good tannins and a clean, elegant finish. It has dark red fruit flavors that blend beautifully with its dry balsamic notes.
We’d recommend pairing this wine with a casual charcuterie board full of various meats and cheeses. However, feel free to get creative with your own wine pairings!
#4 Tenuta di Burchino
This organic wine has some serious love put into it. With hand-picked grapes and an aging process that involves over a year in Slavonian oak casks, you won’t soon forget this bottle. While it’s technically considered a Chianti, the experience of this wine compared to the previous one is far sweeter–well, as sweet as a dry chianti can be anyway 😉
If you’re a fan of cherries, blueberries, and spice then you’ll quickly want to get your hands on this low-carb, organic wine. With only .54 grams of carbs and .18 grams of sugar per glass, the only thing more exciting about this bottle is its subtle floral notes.
We think a congruent wine pairing would be phenomenal with this bottle. Consider a savory mushroom dish that’s not too heavy to really let the flavors shine.
#3 Our PALO61, Toscano Rosso
Did you really think a list of our lowest-carb wines wouldn’t include any of our PALO61 wine? They’re specifically created to have low-carbs, low-sugar, and they even have a nutrition label so you can always be sure of what you’re putting in your body.
For a medium-bodied wine, it’s surprisingly intense with little to no pucker. Subtle black pepper and cherry notes have made it an all-time favorite among wine lovers who prefer the sweet, tartness of cherries. Don’t let that sweetness fool you though, it only has .45 grams of carbs and .19 grams of sugar per glass.
While red wine and steak is a classic pairing, we think sweeter meat, like pork, would really bring out the cherry notes of this wine. The fragrant herbs in a Garlic Rosemary Porkchop dish would be sublime in this instance!
#2 PALO61, Toscana Bianco
Lovers of both Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio will fall in love with this bottle, and for good reason! It’s fresh and delicate with crisp floral notes and subtle hints of balsamic. Plus, if you’re looking for a taste of Italy, this bottle fits the bill. It reflects the terroir of coastal Tuscan winemaking, and even the grape variety used for this particular wine is from the “Il Guado” vineyard near Pisa
Toscana Bianco only has .39 grams of carbs and .18 grams of sugar per glass, making this the perfect guilt-free addition to a number of meals–or even all by itself!
Its balsamic notes complement lighter appetizers and salads, while its lightly floral aromas would create an interesting pairing with herbaceous white meat dishes. A classic pairing, however, is white wine and fish. Check out our Keto-Friendly Salmon with Avocado Salsa recipe for all the details!
#1 PALO61, Toscana Rosato
Honestly, it was a very close call between this bottle and the previous one. A difference of .01 carbs is what gave this bottle our number one spot! With notes of raspberry and rose, you might assume this wine has added sugar–but you’d be wrong. One glass only has .38 grams of carbs and .16 grams of sugar, making this bottle our most keto-friendly option!
Created with a selection of Sangiovese and Syrah grapes from the Pisan hills in Tuscany, this medium-bodied wine is the perfect choice for a number of occasions. We’re thinking an afternoon treat-yourself, a delightful food & wine pairing, or even as a creative summertime fruity mixed drink!
Its fruity, floral notes make it the perfect pairing for our Keto-Friendly Balsamic Watermelon Feta Salad, but it’s also the perfect wine for a Zesty Watermelon Slushie. Imagine all the beautiful flavors of this wine blended with watermelon, lime, and mint. Yes, please!
